Harsh Environment Led Lighting for Waste Water Treatment

The Umm al-Hayman wastewater plant is located at 50 kilometers south of Kuwait City. The plant will treat wastewater with an initial capacity of 500,000 cubic meters of average daily flow.

Background

The Umm Al Hayman (UAH) Wastewater Project (the "Project") consists of the construction of the plant within the boundaries of the current. The Project also includes the construction of sewage and treated water lines from Egailah pumping station to the new station, 300 sewage rising mains and 68 ground reservoirs, together with a major power transformer station.

Challenge

Resistant to moisture, heat, cold and temperature fluctuations, age resistant to UV irradiation, robust against mechanical stress, explosion-proof in certain environments, generally reliable, long-lasting and efficient – such are the essential criteria from the extensive requirement specification that luminaires for sewage treatment plants must meet. Extremely high air humidity and concentrations of hydrogen sulphide permeate the atmosphere of the two basins. This places high demands on the materials used: They must not only be waterproof, robust and resistant to hydrogen sulphide vapours, but their maintenance requirements also need to be as low as possible.

Maintenance and repair measures on the systems, reading measured values or even recovering objects that are blocking the rakes in the tanks – these are typical work in a sewage treatment plant for which bright and glare-free illumination is required. Light with sufficient illumination levels and high uniformity is naturally also indispensable on paths because they often lead through the terrain via stairs, gratings or bridges.

Particularly careful product selection was required for lighting the plateau at the top of a digestion tank because methane gas is extracted from the sewage sludge and the luminaires need to be explosion-proof. A large area at the foot of the digestion tank is illuminated with SUREALL LED, explosion proof spotlight which is recommended for uniform area lighting even from large mounting heights.
