FAQS about Explosion Proof Fittings

Q

Where can you use explosion-proof fittings?

A

Explosion proof fittings are widely used to connect cable and conduit where electrical cable and rigid conduit exist among explosion proof conduit system, Depends on the function, application places include where between cable and explosion proof lighting, cable and explosion proof junction box, cable and explosion proof panel, conduit and explosion proof lighting, conduit and explosion proof junction box, conduit and explosion proof panel, conduit and explosion proof enclosure, two explosion proof panel, you can read the article "Where do you put explosion-proof seals?"

Q

What is explosion proof wiring?

A

Explosion proof wiring request explosion proof conduit, explosion proof connectors to joint the cable together put in conduit from different directions from upstream distribution panel or device to downstream distribution panel or loads. Electrical circuits and conductors are isolated properly inside the conduit through flame proof path thread at all joint places between two conduit ends to cool the hot gas to be incapable of igniting any of the hazardous mixture outside of the explosion proof conduit or explosion proof connectors, you can read the article "What is a conduit adapter?"

Q

What is explosion proof conduit?

A

In a narrow sense, explosion proof conduit is explosion proof electrical cable raceway used in hazardous location. Anyway, NEC 501.10(A)(1)(a) standard allows all threaded rigid metal conduit(RMC), threaded intermediate metal conduit(IMC) to be used as explosion proof conduit in hazardous location because the threaded connection can cool down the heat or burning gas to escape to a mitigated level to stop the explosion outside of the conduit, you can read the article "What conduit can be used in hazardous locations?"

Q

Are rigid couplings explosion proof? Are rigid compression couplings explosion proof?

A

Yes, rigid couplings are explosion proof. A complete conduit layout contains rigid conduit, rigid couplings, explosion proof conduit fittings and explosion proof cable gland, since explosion proof conduit fittings and explosion proof cable gland can stop the explosion from passing into the inner rigid conduit and couplings system basically, more, rigid couplings can be used on hazardous locations since they are already threaded to alleviate the explosion compound to come out from the conduit, you can read the article "What is a conduit body?"

Q

How do you seal explosion proof seal fittings?

A

Normally explosion proof sealing compound made by special chemical water soluble substance in dense condition which can be quickly mixed, hardened to seal around every electrical conductor and between them. The sealing places mainly include all opening hubs such as the threaded connection outlet, access of compound and even water drainage outlet to block all passing way and gap for any explosion gas or mixture, you can also read the article "What is a eys?"

Q

Can Ex d enclosures be joined together with a Y seal?

A

Yes, Ex d enclosures can be and must be joined together with a Y seal, normally a Y type explosion proof sealing fitting which have an extra dichotomous entry to pour the explosion proof seal compound to block all conduit entries. Ex d enclosures is flame proof enclosure where explosion is possible to occur inside the enclosure, a Y explosion proof seal can stop the inner explosion heat pass to the conduit through the explosion proof seal, you can also read the article "Where do you put explosion-proof seals"

Q

Which type of cable is allowed in hazardous locations?

A

Mainly MI cable, MC-HL cable is allowed to connect any explosion proof lighting, explosion proof enclosure in classified area such as class 1 div 1 in hazardous location. SUREALL explosion proof cable gland can be used to fix these types of cable to provide the cable entry with electricity for any of electrical equipment, you can read the article "What is the function of explosion protected cable glands?"

Q

What is conduit seals? What are seal off fittings?

A

Explosion proof conduit seals or seal off fittings, also called explosion proof sealing fittings, are a sealing coupling with designed clogged conduit outlet between explosion proof enclosure and conduit wiring system, they are widely used to connect explosion proof enclosure without damaging the explosion proof structure, you can read the article "Why are seals used in explosion proof wiring systems?"
